The new Patch Tuesday update fails on some Windows 11 machines.
Several Windows 11 machines experience boot problems and enter recovery mode due to a new update. Virtual machines, in particular, are affected by an error in the ACPI.sys file, reports Techcrunch.
Small Number of VMs
The ACPI.sys file is necessary for power management in Windows. If there’s an issue with it, your PC won’t boot. Microsoft has not yet provided a definitive solution. In a recently published security advisory, Microsoft recommends avoiding the May 13 update. Only a small number of virtual machines are affected, such as Azure Virtual Machine, Azure Virtual Desktop, and on-premises virtual machines running on Citrix or Hyper-V.
The update is not successfully installed, causing devices to enter recovery mode. Home users will hardly notice it; it’s primarily professional environments with extensive virtualization that are affected.
As Windows 10 support is ending soon, Microsoft is advising its users to upgrade to Windows 11. A somewhat strange choice, given all the problems the operating system has already experienced. Problems have been coming hand in hand with new Windows updates this year. One update caused boot issues, but a solution was found relatively quickly. Another patch caused File Explorer and webcams to crash.
