Microsoft Teams will implement improvements to its default messaging security in January.
Starting January 12, 2026, Microsoft Teams will automatically enable security features for messages to counter unwanted content. “We are improving message security in Microsoft Teams by enabling default key protections,” Microsoft said in a Microsoft 365 center update, noted by Bleeping Computer. “This update helps protect users from malicious content and provides options for reporting incorrect detections.”
Last month, security researchers discovered four security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Teams. These allowed malicious actors to manipulate messages, falsify notifications, or impersonate another user.
Three security features
Microsoft mentions three key security features that will be active from January. These include protection against certain file types, detection of malicious URLs, and a system for reporting false positives.

As soon as message security is enabled, users will receive a warning notification for suspicious messages. In addition, they will have the option to mark unjustified security detections and block potentially malicious file types.
Companies that have already applied these settings will not notice any changes from January. Administrators who still want to apply the security features must adjust the settings before January 12, 2026.
