Teams Finally Introduces Threads in Channels

Microsoft adds the long-awaited threading feature to Teams.

Microsoft has launched a public preview of threads in Teams this week, a long-awaited feature that should make channel conversations more organized. This introduction follows an earlier promise to roll out the feature by mid-2025.

Choice between Threads or Separate Posts

For now, threads are only available within Teams channels. Unlike Slack, however, channel administrators must choose in advance whether the channel works with separate messages or with threads. It’s therefore not possible to create threads within every conversation, which somewhat limits flexibility.

According to Microsoft, threads help to more easily follow and categorize discussions, and to feed decisions back into the main conversation in a structured way. In the new “followed threads” view, you can bundle all discussions that you consider important.

More Emojis, Better Slash Commands

Besides the threading feature, Microsoft is also rolling out another highly requested addition: the ability to add multiple emojis per message. This feature is now also in public preview. Slash commands, such as /gif, are being expanded with new search options.

With these updates, Microsoft responds to years of user feedback and brings Teams’ user experience closer to that of competitor Slack.
