The suspicions were already there, but now Apple has also officially confirmed it will no longer roll out security updates for iOS 14, rolling out its successor, iOS 15, to iPhone devices still running iOS 14.
Apple is eager to get everyone on board with installing its latest operating system and is throwing in drastic measures to do so. Last week, MacRumors and 9to5Mac, websites that keep everyone updated on Apple news, noticed that security updates for iOS 14 were no longer installable. Apple itself is now announcing that it is no longer rolling out security updates to iOS 14.
In the statement, Apple points out that when iOS 15 was released, the support page always indicated that iOS 14 would receive security updates only temporarily. Until exactly which date is temporary, then, is now coming to light.
iOS 15 does away with iOS 14
Then again, Apple does not clarify why this decision was made. Perhaps Apple wants to get everyone on iOS 15. Figures recently showed that of the users who can run iOS 15, 72 percent installed the new operating system. A lot of Apple devices therefore receive support for the new operating system, including older versions of the iPhone.
The successor to iOS 14 has been available to install since September 2021. Originally, not all Apple users will have embraced iOS 15 right away, as a lot of promised features were still pending. Meanwhile, Apple has kept its promises, and now that iOS 14 is also no longer getting security updates, it is important to try out iOS 15 soon.
Devices that are older could not all run iOS 14. Operating systems iOS 12 and 13 continue to be supported for those as well.
