Nvidia confirms that hackers have captured sensitive information and are now leaking it. Among other things, the attackers are demanding that the company open-source its drivers, but Nvidia seems unimpressed.
Late last month it became known that hackers had cracked Nvidia’s mailbox. Thieves from presumably South American hacker collective Lapsus$ claimed they were able to get their hands on 1 TB of data. Nvidia launched an unseen counterattack in an attempt to encrypt the stolen data, but was too late.
Now Nvidia confirms that Lapsus$ did indeed steal data. The company is analyzing exactly what the criminals will leak to the Internet. The hackers have already started posting an initial 19 GB archive to the Internet. Lapsus$$ itself claims to possess data on employees as well as future graphics cards. Even code for DLSS technology is said to be part of the hack. For its part, Nvidia does not expect the affair to have an impact on the business or on customers.
Opensource
The attackers initially demanded a ransom from Nvidia, but now seem to be going for a supposedly nobler goal. They want Nvidia to decide by Friday to make all its drivers open source. Presumably the hacker group opted for another demand under pressure from the general visibility of the attack. Nvidia, for its part, has not yet responded and does not appear to be planning to do so.
