The FortiGate 700G Series is a new firewall solution from Fortinet, aimed at modern campus networks and hybrid IT environments. The firewall offers support for post-quantum cryptography and AI-driven threat detection.
Fortinet expands its portfolio of network security solutions with the FortiGate 700G Series. This next-generation firewall features Fortinet’s in-house developed network and security processors: the Network Processor 7 (NP7) and the Security Processor 5 (SP5). The manufacturer has long relied on its own chips to boost the performance of its firewalls. For example, the NP7 has been in use since the introduction of the FortiGate 1800F in 2020. We wrote more about the SP5 during its launch with the FortiGate 90G in 2023.
Fortinet combines the hardware with features from the FortiOS operating system. The firewall has been designed with the complexity of hybrid networks in mind, focusing on scalability and energy efficiency.
High Throughput
According to Fortinet, the FortiGate 700G offers high performance, thanks to its custom-made chips. This translates into throughput of up to 164 Gbps and threat protection up to 26 Gbps. Moreover, the firewall consumes less energy than comparable systems, the manufacturer claims. The FortiGate 700G supports various network interfaces from 5GE to 25GE.
Fortinet highlights the support for post-quantum cryptography. Encryption algorithms in the operating system are quantum-resistant and should help organizations with a step-by-step transition. This is particularly relevant for sectors such as finance, healthcare, and government, where long retention periods for sensitive data apply.
AI Component
In addition to hardware performance, Fortinet emphasizes the use of AI. The FortiGate 700G utilizes FortiAI-Protect and FortiGuard AI-Powered Security Services to automatically detect threats. AI also plays a role in analyzing risks around the use of generative AI (GenAI), including shadow use of AI applications in companies. The firewall can adjust access control accordingly.
Finally, the firewall features FortiSentry, a separate hardware module for monitoring critical system files. This detects unauthorized access without disrupting system operations.
