Meta makes it easier and safer to log in to Facebook.
Soon, users of the Facebook app will be able to use a passkey on iOS and Android devices. This means that people can log in with a password using the same credentials they already use on their smartphone. Think of a PIN code, fingerprint, or facial scan.
Faster and Safer than Passwords
Passkeys replace the traditional password with biometric or local verification. This is not only convenient but also safer and more resistant to phishing and data breaches. How secure it is depends on the method. A four-digit PIN code is obviously easier to bypass than a facial scan or fingerprint.
Messenger to Follow Later
The passkey support is coming to the Facebook app first, Meta writes in the announcement. For Messenger, it’s still a wait: that update will follow “in the coming months.” When the feature is active, the same passkey will work for both apps.
Passkeys still appear to be not very popular with the general public, but more and more companies are already introducing them. However, Meta is relatively late with this update. Google, Microsoft and Amazon have supported passkeys for a while. WhatsApp already received support earlier, while Instagram is still lagging behind for now.
