Synology DSM 7.1 Beta refines storage management and adds new features

synology NAS

Synology is making DSM 7.1 Beta available for compatible NAS systems. The focus is on optimization, but it also adds a lot of new features.

Synology is launching the first public beta of DSM 7.1. Unlike the giant leap that was DSM 7.0, the latest update focuses on refinement of introduced new features and other optimizations. The number of new applications is limited to complete bare-metal backups of entire systems. Other optimizations include:

  • Active Backup for Business: bandwidth control, more granularity within monitoring and reporting, support for DSM backups
  • Active Insight: Hyper Backup task status, centralized monitoring of login activity
  • Synology C2 Hybrid Share: server-side snapshots for better file protection
  • Directory Server: support for read-only domain controllers for more secure and flexible deployment
  • Synology Drive: updated mobile ease of use and enhanced monitoring and auditing capabilities
  • MailPlus: Virtual DSM support, more management options, improvements around import and migration
  • Virtual Machine Manager: storage I/O performance improvements and QoS capabilities

Update already?

It is important to emphasize that this is a beta version of Synology DSM and there may still be stability issues. Do you have a NAS lying around that is not running in a production environment and would like to get started with the new features? Then you can go here to download the beta.

Don’t need any of the above new features acutely? Then stay away from this first beta version for a while until Synology fixes the most important bugs. There is no deadline for the stable release of DSM 7.1 for now.

Synology DSM 7.0 was Synology’s biggest update ever last year with an awful lot of new features. Read our complete guide around DSM 7.0 here.
