Synology adds a new rack server to its ActiveProtect offering. The DP7200 has a lower capacity and is more entry-level friendly.
Synology adds the DP7200 to its ActiveProtect family. The DP7200 is a rack server, built entirely for backups. Synology delivers the device with 84 TB of built-in capacity and equips it with its self-developed ActiveProtect Manager. This operating system provides users with an environment in which they can configure backups for servers, virtual machines, and PCs, among others.
The Synology DP7200 has the same features as other devices in the series. These include a central management platform for backups, protection against ransomware through extensive access control, and deduplication to save space.
Backup Solution
Synology introduced the ActiveProtect series last year and launched it in January of this year. The DP7200 is a variant of the DP7400 that was brought to market then, which offers a higher capacity of 140 TB. The series also includes two desktop variants of the devices, which look like a NAS.
The devices fit into Synology’s new strategy, which focuses on complete control over the entire device. For instance, Synology delivers the server with a predetermined capacity, equipped with its own drives (although in fact, these are Seagate drives with different firmware and a different label). This way, Synology claims to offer better service to customers, albeit at the cost of flexibility for those customers.
