OpenAI will allow business users to store their data within European borders.
OpenAI reveals in a blog post that it will store data from business users on European servers in the future. Business users include Enterprise and Edu users. This option is also valid for the API platform. The purpose of this is to better comply with privacy laws and compliance regulations, according to the company.
Data residency
OpenAI wants to offer “Data Residency” to European users. This means that ChatGPT Plus and Edu users can choose to store their data within the borders of Europe. It is also possible for API users to have data processing within Europe for suitable endpoints. This can be done by creating a new project and designating Europe as the region. According to OpenAI, API requests are processed in the region with zero data retention. It is not possible to migrate an existing project between regions.

Non-sensitive data, such as billing or usage analytics, will be processed and stored outside of Europe, OpenAI said in the announcement. The company also published an FAQ page with more information on how this works.
The new Data Residency makes it easier for businesses in Europe to comply with local regulations. It also provides business customers with more control over their own data.
