New iOS and iPadOS versions mean the end for certain iPhone and iPad models. This overview shows you if your device will still be supported.

After iOS 18 comes iOS 26. Apple officially unveiled the new version of the mobile operating system yesterday during WWDC and switches to a naming scheme based on years. iPadOS and macOS will now also follow this numbering.

Apple has a habit of keeping devices alive for a long time, and the majority of still-supported iPhone and iPad models will make the transition. However, every year there are a few models that Apple sends to the eternal hunting grounds. It concerns only a very limited number of older devices. In this overview, we list which devices will and will not be supported anymore.

iOS 26 iPadOS 26: Compatible Devices

The list of compatible iPhones for iOS 26 includes all generations from the iPhone 11 from 2019 and the iPhone SE from 2020. For the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, it’s over from this year. Apple will continue to provide security updates for these devices for a while.

For iPadOS 26, there’s only one dropout. The seventh generation from 2019 will no longer receive the latest version. If you have an iPad from 2020 or newer, you’re good for at least one more year.

macOS: Intel’s Swan Song

Regarding macOS, Apple brings out the blunter axe. The new version macOS 26, or macOS Tahoe for friends, makes it clear that the Intel era is definitively over. Only four Intel-based Macs will still receive the latest version. From 2028, Apple will definitively drop all Macs with an Intel processor and only support models with a homemade M-processor.
