The new Workday EU Sovereign Cloud allows European organizations to use HR and financial software with complete data control and residency within the EU.

During the Workday Rising event, Workday is jumping on the sovereignty bandwagon. With the launch of the EU Sovereign Cloud, Workday wants to put European organizations at ease. The solution promises that all data will remain within the borders of the EU.

Workday’s sovereign cloud environment has been set up in response to growing concerns about data sovereignty, changing regulations such as the EU Data Act, and the increasing need for control over data when using AI. More than 80 percent of European business leaders now see data sovereignty as a strategic priority, even though there is no single, comprehensive definition of the concept.

Supervision within the EU

Workday EU Sovereign Cloud offers an infrastructure in which data storage, processing, support and maintenance are carried out entirely by personnel within European jurisdiction. The solution guarantees that customer data does not leave the EU, even during AI processing. Thanks to encryption and control mechanisms, data remains protected, and Workday performs independent audits for transparency.

The cloud solution runs on top of the AWS infrastructure and uses data centers that are geographically dispersed within the EU. All activities are carried out by employees under European supervision. A specially appointed EU advisory board must ensure compliance with regulations and monitoring of data sovereignty. After all, as a company headquartered in the United States, it is also subject to American legislation, which may conflict with European legislation.

The EU Sovereign Cloud must provide guarantees in terms of compliance and security, so that organizations can use AI without the risk of data leaks or violation of privacy legislation. The Workday EU Sovereign Cloud will be available to European customers from 2026.
