OpenAI uses Anthropic’s standard to connect its AI assistants with systems where data is stored.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said on X that OpenAI is adding support for Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) in all its products. MCP is an open-source standard that helps AI models provide better and more relevant answers to certain questions.
Popular Protocol
With MCP, developers can build AI applications that are connected to data sources where data resides, such as software, business tools, content repositories, or app development environments. In other words, the protocol is a simple and reliable way for AI systems to obtain the data they need.
How does it work exactly? Developers expose their data in MCP servers or build AI applications (MCP clients) that can connect to these servers. After Anthropic’s introduction of the open-source protocol in 2024, it has become immensely popular, and several companies have added MCP support.
MCP is already available in the Agents SDK framework, and support for the ChatGPT desktop app and OpenAI’s API will follow soon.
