ChatGPT has been experiencing technical difficulties since this afternoon. The outage appears to be having worldwide impact.
Update 4:31 p.m.: OpenAI now confirms it has also applied a fix. ChatGPT should be fully operational again, but with an “increased error rate,” OpenAI says. That announcement applies to both the application and the API. The situation will be followed up by OpenAI from a closer look at whether everything continues to work.
Update 3:50 p.m.: ChatGPT appears to be quietly coming back online. OpenAI warns that “reduced performance” will remain possible for some time.
You may have already experienced it yourself: ChatGPT is currently down. Through DownDetector, thousands of reports are coming in about the popular chatbot. From Belgium to the United States and Singapore: the outage seems to be happening worldwide. In the morning, ChatGPT was still reachable, but around 12:45 a.m. in our time zone, reports of problems started coming in.
OpenAI speaks of a “partial outage” on its status page. Other than ChatGPT, no other services appear to have been affected. Without going into detail, OpenAI says it has found the cause of the problem. A solution is being worked on, so until then there is nothing left but to wait until ChatGPT is fully operational again.
It is the second time in a short time that ChatGPT is down. The last global outage occurred in December. An official explanation for the problems has not come out, but possibly ChatGPT is suffering from its own success. When too many users surf to a page at the same time, it can overload the servers.
We will monitor the situation and update this article as soon as there is more information.
