AWS announces the European Sovereign Cloud, which will relocate certain business units and processes to Europe.
AWS has announced its plans to launch the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This means the company will fully relocate certain business processes to Europe, including the management of Amazon Web Services. The cloud infrastructure will be available by the end of 2025 and, according to AWS, will give European customers more control over their data, with local governance and a specific security center.
Local control
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will fall under a new parent company, fully established in the EU and led by EU citizens. The new company aims to manage cloud services completely autonomously, without dependence on infrastructure outside the EU. The infrastructure and operational control will remain exclusively within Europe, providing important guarantees for customers concerned about digital sovereignty.

The cloud infrastructure will use a dedicated network infrastructure and will include European Points of Presence (PoP) for direct network connections. This architecture allows customers to autonomously connect to the AWS European Sovereign Cloud via AWS Direct Connect.
European standards
To ensure the security of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a dedicated Security Operations Center (SOC) will be established. This center will reflect global security standards, with a focus on the specific requirements of European customers. AWS has worked with European regulatory bodies, such as the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), to ensure that the new cloud meets strict security and compliance requirements.
Kathrin Renz, who will take the lead as general manager, emphasized that customers do not have to sacrifice functionality, performance, or innovation to meet their sovereignty needs. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud offers customers the full power of the AWS cloud, including AI services such as Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Q, while maintaining the necessary protection of data and privacy.
