OpenAI Tests Affordable ChatGPT in Developing Countries

OpenAI launches ChatGPT Go. This is a lightweight and affordable subscription to ChatGPT that is currently exclusively available in developing countries.

OpenAI aims to broaden global access to ChatGPT. To achieve this, the company is launching a new payment plan: ChatGPT Go. The subscription costs approximately 3.89 euros per month and removes many limitations of the free version.

This gives users access to more context, deeper analyses, and more complex search capabilities. Go users can also work with files in more detail. Compared to the Plus subscription, there are still limitations. For example, the GPT-5 model with advanced reasoning capabilities is reserved for the more expensive plan, although ChatGPT Go users can still use the standard version of GPT-5.

Exclusive to Emerging Markets

OpenAI is currently focusing exclusively on developing countries and emerging markets with this offering. The subscription will initially be available in India. It is unclear whether OpenAI has plans to roll out the entry-level payment plan to Europe.

The move highlights the importance of emerging markets. There has been a competitive struggle in these regions for mobile market share for several years, as the traditional market is saturated. Countries like India and various African nations have a less affluent but extensive population. Tech companies can and want to gain market share there.

The Go subscription will be rolled out to relevant markets in the coming days. Other players like Google are also considering a subscription tier tailored to such regions.
