Nvidia Plans to Invest up to $100 Billion in OpenAI’s AI Infrastructure

Nvidia will gradually invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI’s AI infrastructure, with a combined capacity of at least 10 gigawatts.

Nvidia’s shares rose by four percent after the company announced its plans to invest $100 billion in OpenAI. The goal is to jointly build a large-scale AI infrastructure. The plans include deploying at least 10 gigawatts of computing power through Nvidia systems, intended to train and run future AI models. The first phase will start in the second half of 2026 with the rollout of Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform.

Phased Deployment of AI Systems

From one billion-dollar deal to another: Oracle and OpenAI recently announced their collaboration and signed a $300 billion cloud contract, but Microsoft also recently approached Anthropic. Now it’s Nvidia’s turn to enter into a new partnership with OpenAI.

The collaboration revolves around building an infrastructure suitable for artificial general intelligence. The deployment of Nvidia’s technology will happen in phases. For each gigawatt of processed capacity, there will be a corresponding investment from Nvidia. According to the company, this investment could gradually increase to $100 billion. The first systems will become operational in 2026 and will run on the new Vera Rubin platform.

“Nvidia and OpenAI have been pushing each other for ten years, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthrough of ChatGPT,” says Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia. “This investment and infrastructure partnership marks the next leap forward: deploying 10 gigawatts to power the next era of intelligence.”

On Top of Existing Collaborations

OpenAI has been using Nvidia systems for training AI models, including ChatGPT, since its inception. OpenAI now counts more than 700 million weekly users and has a strong presence among both large and small enterprises.

The new agreement comes on top of existing collaborations that OpenAI has with Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate partners, among others.
