Mistral AI is investing 1.2 billion euros in a data center in Sweden. The data center is expected to be operational by 2027 and represents Mistral AI’s first AI infrastructure investment outside of France.
The French company Mistral AI and EcoDataCenter are building a new data center at EcoDataCenter’s site in Borlänge, Sweden, through a long-term partnership. “This investment is a concrete step toward building independent capabilities in Europe dedicated to AI,” said Arthur Mensch, CEO and co-founder of Mistral AI. This marks the French company’s first deployment of AI infrastructure outside its home market. The data center is scheduled to open in 2027.
European AI stack
Through this partnership, the companies aim to develop an integrated European AI stack. This means the entire chain, from infrastructure to model development and data processing, takes place within Europe. Data is processed and stored locally.
“By delivering a fully vertical offering with locally processed and stored data, we are strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy and competitiveness. This lays the foundation for a European AI cloud that can serve industries, public institutions, and researchers at scale,” Mensch explained.
