‘Apple fails to comply with Europe’s Digital Markets Act’

Interest groups that advocate for digital rights claim that Apple is not fulfilling its Digital Markets Act (DMA) obligations.

Interest groups have expressed their displeasure with Apple in a letter. The company would not meet the DMA ‘s interoperability obligations.

Gatekeeper

The DMA requires so-called gatekeepers, of which Apple is a part, to provide nondiscriminatory access to their software and hardware. Apple would restrict developers by imposing Non-Disclosure Agreements without transparent guidelines. It also calls for a standardized interoperability request form.

A second point in the letter is Apple’s policy of hiding certain APIs for security reasons. “Interoperability should be based on open standards,” the organizations believe. In addition, the bug reporting system should be improved and the EU should be more involved in disputes.

For now, it remains to be seen whether the EU will act on these allegations. Apple was recently fined because its App Store policy violates steering rules from the DMA. Those tell that the ecosystem of gatekeepers, to which Apple belongs, must be sufficiently open. The EU believes Apple is undermining alternative app stores.
