2021 was a farm year for AMD with nice growth rates and increasing market share in the laptop and server market. The pressure is thus once again mounting on Intel.
Research from Mercury Research shows that AMD continues to grow briskly across the x86 CPU market. It accounts for 25.6% of shipments today, compared with Intel’s 74.4%. AMD grew 3.9 percentage points year over year.
Looking at the specific numbers within mobile, desktop and server, team red is growing the strongest in the latter category with 3.6 percentage points to 10.7% market share. Market share within laptop chips is also growing, while within desktop Intel is distancing itself. You can analyze the full numbers below.
ARM and x86
Mercury Research also focuses on ARM chips in its research, measuring in 2021 that 9.5 percent of PCs had an ARM chip on board. Obviously, Apple with its M1 chips are the main driver, but the numbers also include some Chromebooks.
Earlier this year, we analyzed the rise of ARM and how it may be preferred over x86 in the coming years. However, the future is not black and white; there remains a market for both technologies. Read all about it here.
