AMD and Anthropic sign five-billion-dollar chip pact

AMD

Anthropic will deploy up to two gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs. AMD, in turn, is investing five billion dollars in Anthropic.

AMD and Anthropic announce a collaboration encompassing both chips and technical cooperation. Anthropic is purchasing two gigawatts worth of AMD Instinct chips. AMD is indirectly financing this purchase itself with a five-billion-dollar investment in Anthropic.

The demand for computing power for AI training and inference is growing exponentially. With this move, Anthropic aims to secure sufficient capacity to offer Claude to a growing number of customers, while AMD strengthens its position in the global AI infrastructure market. AMD is positioning itself as the primary competitor to Nvidia in the GPU market.

Total package

Anthropic is signing up for the total package: the AI company will deploy AMD Helios solutions with Instinct MI455X GPUs, supplemented by Epyc Venice processors, Pensando networking, and ROCm software. This configuration is specifically designed for large-scale AI training and inference. The first gigawatt of capacity will go online in the first half of 2027, which will later be expanded to two gigawatts.

This builds on Anthropic’s existing use of AMD chips. The move marks a significant expansion of AMD’s role in global AI infrastructure development. Tom Brown, co-founder and chief compute officer of Anthropic, emphasizes that access to computing power is crucial to keep Claude running.

Technical collaboration

In addition to the hardware rollout, AMD and Anthropic are also entering into a multi-year technological collaboration. Claude will be used to optimize GPU workloads and accelerate ROCm software development. Furthermore, AMD will deploy Claude broadly within its engineering and product development teams.

In exchange for all this, AMD promises a five-billion-dollar investment in Anthropic. One could say, therefore, that AMD is paying for its own chips. Dr. Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, speaks of a collaboration that combines Anthropic’s AI leadership with AMD’s computing power.

The two companies state that this announcement marks a significant moment in their partnership. By combining gigawatt-scale implementation and deep technical collaboration, they are laying a long-term foundation for the next generation of AI infrastructure. For Anthropic, diversifying hardware partners provides the flexibility to deploy workloads optimally.

The collaboration illustrates how hardware and software companies are increasingly converging in the AI landscape. With the growing demand for AI capacity, such strategic partnerships are likely to become more common in the industry.
