How to remove Edge from your PC

Edge is a browser that not everyone is a fan of, and also one that is not easy to remove.

Some people swear by the Edge browser in Windows, others only use it to quickly download another browser. We have to admit that the browser has come a long way and has now definitely grown into a decent browser. For those who prefer to use Safari, Firefox or Chrome, it is not convenient that the browser is installed by default.

Anyway: Edge is a browser that you can’t just throw off your computer. In this guide, we’ll show you two ways to permanently remove the browser: via the control panel or via settings.

Please note: Edge cannot be completely removed because it is an important part of Windows. We will remove the browser, but the background processes will continue to run. This is necessary for Windows to function properly.

  • Step 1: Edge settings

Open Microsoft Edge and type edge://settings/help in the search bar. There you will see the Edge version number at the top. We need this to find the installation file.

  • Step 2: Find the installation file

Go to Explorer and navigate to this path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\[Version number]\Installer, without the square brackets.

  • Step 3: Remove

In the Installer folder you will see an .exe file. Right-click on it, then Open in Terminal. Enter the following command there:

    setup.exe –uninstall –system-level –verbose-logging –force-uninstall

If you then restart your PC, Edge will be removed. It is possible that Windows will reinstall the browser itself with a newer version. Then you can use this method again, or remove Edge via the Control Panel.

  • Control Panel

If you want to remove Edge via the Control Panel, search for Control Panel in the start bar. Click on it and you will see Programs, Uninstall a program in the bottom left. If you click on it, search for Edge and remove the app.
