Those running Windows 10 2004 or Windows 10 20H2 today should expect an automatic update very soon toward Windows 10 21H2, the latest version.
Microsoft is speeding up the update pace that gets users switched to the latest version. Those running Windows 10 version 2004 or version 20H2 today may soon expect an automatic update through the official Windows Update channel. According to Microsoft, this is a compact update that will be processed smoothly thanks to the use of machine learning.
For those running Windows 10 2004, we recommend updating as soon as possible anyway because it is EOL (end-of-life) as of Dec. 14, 2021 and therefore insecure. Windows 10 20H2 is only supported until May 10, 2022. Due to the automatic update to Windows 10 21H2, you can take it again until June 13, 2023.
With the focus on Windows 11, it goes without saying that updates to Windows 10 are rather small now and in the future. Still, there is always the chance that something could go wrong. Just look at the recent Patch Tuesday where Microsoft had to quickly release an update to mitigate VPN issues. Being careful remains the message.
According to AdDuplex, 31.8 percent of PCs today are running Windows 10 20H2 and 11 percent are running Windows 10 2004. Presumably the latter’s numbers will drop quickly this period because of its EOL status.
