The iPad version of WhatsApp seems to be in the works, but is not officially confirmed by the developers for now.
WhatsApp on iPad, will we ever get to welcome this version? There were the first rumors in the middle of last year after WhatsApp admitted that it was working on a feature where you can link four devices to one account. Late last year, that feature rolled out to all users, but there is no word yet of an iPad app.
In an interview with The Verge, Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp at Meta, confirms that users have long wanted an iPad app. “We would love to do that. We’ve put a lot of work into the technology to support multiple devices with one account. Our web versions and desktop apps support the technology today.”
Those who enable multi-device today will be able to use WhatsApp just fine without their phone being turned on or having network coverage. According to Cathcart, this is very important in rolling out a tablet app. “The underlying technology is already in place today,” he said.
Because WhatsApp encrypts every message, for a long time it was not possible to sync messages across devices. Now that that barrier has been removed, Cathcart admits that they would like to release an iPad app, but does not confirm its existence. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long for the official launch of the WhatsApp iPad app.
