Microsoft officially stops production of HoloLens 2 and starts stock sales of last models. A successor is also no longer in the works.
End of story for the HoloLens 2. The mixed reality headset did not catch on with the general public, so Microsoft decided to discontinue production. The same happened with the first version of the device, whose production was stopped back in 2018.
Microsoft now wants to focus on virtual reality thanks to its partnership with Meta. Interested parties can still buy the HoloLens 2 for $3500, while supplies last.
Did the HoloLens even have a future?
HoloLens had been in difficult waters for some time. It had been clear for some time that there would be no successor because Microsoft had no clear vision. The Verge reported early last year about a round of layoffs that thoroughly affected Microsoft’s mixed reality division. Finally, a military version of the HoloLens turned out to be a fiasco, as it gave soldiers a headache.
Microsoft is still offering support for the headset until the end of 2027. The first generation of HoloLens headsets are already getting their last service update at the end of this year. Both models will soon no longer receive security updates or technical support.
