According to Apple, the new M5 chip delivers up to four times faster GPU computing power for AI workloads compared to its predecessor. The chip is available in the new MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro.

Apple has introduced the M5 chip as the next step in its silicon lineup, with a clear focus on AI processing. Built on 3-nanometer technology, it features a next-generation 10-core GPU. Each GPU core contains a Neural Accelerator, resulting in peak GPU computing power for AI applications that’s more than four times higher than the M4. Compared to the M1, there’s a six-fold improvement.

The M5 chip is available in the new MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro, which will be available from October 22.

Graphics Improvement

The M5 chip includes a new ray-tracing engine and improved shader cores. According to Apple, graphics performance is up to 45 percent faster than its predecessor, the M4. Second-generation dynamic caching also improves the rendering of complex graphics applications. Apple cites examples such as more realistic images in 3D apps and faster rendering times in software like Draw Things.

Focus on AI

Besides graphics improvements, Apple has also modified the Neural Engine. This 16-core engine supports AI features such as spatial scenes on the Apple Vision Pro and accelerates the processing of Apple Intelligence, Apple’s AI platform. Thanks to optimizations in CPU, GPU, and memory architecture, M5 can run AI models locally, without depending on external servers.

The M5 chip now supports a unified memory bandwidth of 153 GB/s, an increase of nearly 30 percent compared to the M4. This architecture allows larger AI models to run directly on the device. With memory capacity up to 32 GB, users should be able to run multiple demanding applications simultaneously, such as video editing and cloud storage.

The M5 is available in the new versions of the 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro. All devices are available for pre-order starting today.
