Windows updates will soon have shorter and clearer names.
Microsoft is simplifying the titles of Windows updates to make them more readable and consistent. Until now, update names were known for their long descriptions with date codes and other references. With the new approach, Microsoft mainly wants to remove that ballast.
Clearer Titles
From now on, updates will have a short and clear name, with the familiar Knowledge Base (KB) number and relevant build information. For example, Patch Tuesday updates will be displayed as Security Update (KB5066835) (26200.6899) instead of half a paragraph full of version details. This provides clarity in Windows Update and in the list of installed updates.
Less Technical Ballast
Microsoft is deliberately dropping date codes, platform designations and other superfluous information. The system remains just as complex behind the scenes, but the communication surrounding it should become less complicated. .NET framework updates, drivers and AI components will also receive clearer titles with only important information.
For companies that roll out updates via Microsoft Update Catalog or WSUS, little changes. The extensive, technical titles remain visible there, except for Visual Studio updates. Microsoft believes these details are necessary for automated distribution and accurate filtering.
