Have you discovered a folder named inetpub after installing the latest Windows 11 update? A bug in the update unintentionally creates the folder, but it’s completely harmless.
Microsoft rolled out KB5055523 last Tuesday, the monthly security update for Windows 11. As usual, reports of errors in the update didn’t take long to surface. The bug that Windows Latest discovered falls into the category of ‘harmless, but bizarre’: the update leaves a folder named inetpub behind in File Explorer.

Strange Gift
The folder appears in the C drive (Windows (C:) in File Explorer. After installing the April update, we also saw the folder appear on our device. Inetpub doesn’t come completely out of nowhere: the folder is linked to Internet Information Services (IIS), an optional software component for web and app hosting in Windows.
It seems that the latest Windows update causes IIS to spring into action and create the folder, regardless of whether you use the component or not. Why this happens, only Microsoft knows, which hasn’t yet communicated about it in the KB5055523 update. The inetpub folder is empty and completely harmless, and can be easily removed from File Explorer.
Windows updates have caused much bigger problems in the recent past. Blue screens, freezing during installation, Copilot that is missing or demon-possessed printers: these are just a few of the problems caused by monthly Windows updates this year alone. Windows users can only hope that this month it stops at just a strange folder in File Explorer.

Hello Windows?
Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The update also affects Windows Hello. Users receive an error message that their PIN doesn’t work. Microsoft has acknowledged this problem and recommends resetting your PIN through the settings.
