Errors and Windows updates go hand in hand, as evidenced once again by this new crash.
Microsoft says recent Windows 11 24H2 updates can cause computers to crash. This crash leads to a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).
Problem after restarting
The problem reportedly occurs after installing KB5055523 and KB5053656 updates from April and March. Users then see the error code 0x18B SECURE_KERNEL_ERROR. The crash occurs when restarting a PC after users have installed the security updates from April and March. This is due to an error in the secure kernel, a critical security component of Windows.
Microsoft has temporarily resolved the issue via Known Issue Rollback (KIR). This allows updates to be rolled back. For home users and unmanaged business devices, this solution will roll out within 24 hours. A simple restart accelerates the recovery.
Manual action required for managed systems
Microsoft says that IT administrators of Windows Enterprise systems need to apply a special group policy via Group Policy Editor. The KIR update is called KB5053656 250412_03103 and requires a restart after installation. It is convenient that in Windows 11, updates work without requiring a restart. The same April update left behind a mysterious folder. The March update removed the Copilot app and caused Windows to freeze, among other issues.
