Microsoft hooks Terminal to ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot. Through Terminal Chat, AI can help you draft commands or fix bugs in Windows.
No idea where to start in Windows Terminal? Then ask AI. Windows Latest noticed an AI chat feature in the latest version of Terminal, which has the very original name Terminal Chat. Through Terminal Chat, you can chat with AI to ask for help with commands or to let AI help solve problems in Windows.
To use Terminal Chat, you do need to be in possession of API keys. Microsoft offers you a choice between GitHub Copilot, Azure OpenAI or OpenAI. A new window appears in the settings where you can hook a chatbot of your choice to Terminal. The chat functions is then available in PowerShell, Command Prompt, Azure Cloud Shell or WSL Ubuntu.
Ask AI
The chat window has the same layout as ChatGPT, albeit with fewer features. You have a text box, an expert button and the option to clear the chat history. The chat feature can get you started with simple to more complex commands, find solutions to errors or write simple code snippets.
Terminal Chat is aware of the context in which you ask the question. If you open the chat function in a specific tab in PowerShell, it knows it should look for information there. It also remembers the tab when you move to another tab. If you change from PowerShell to Azure Cloud Shell, Terminal Chat is also aware of that.
Microsoft is rolling out AI features within Windows under the rubric of “Copilot. No Windows application seems to escape it yet. Not every AI feature Microsoft announces for Windows is a hit.
