Data specialist Snowflake is buying Streamlit: a company that helps organizations build data-based applications.
Snowflake buys Streamlit for $800 million. Snowflake allows companies to unlock their data across silos and even organizations in a manageable data cloud. Streamlit is a start-up that developed an open source tool that allows enterprises to easily build applications on top of their data. It takes little imagination to see why Snowflake went for this acquisition.
Both customers and IT professionals within Snowflake itself were already using Streamlit, so the two were a good match, according to Benoît Dageville, co-founder of Snowflake. Streamlit brings a missing piece of the puzzle by giving organizations handy tools for interacting with data.
Focused on developers
Streamlit is aimed at developers, but has a low entry level. The start-up provides a framework that allows developers to quickly convert scripts in Python into Web applications they can share. That expected level of technical expertise aligns with that of Snowflake. That platform also expects IT knowledge, but tries to be as accessible as possible to those with the right background.
The deal has yet to be approved by regulatory authorities, although that appears to be a formality. No deadline is sticking to the completion of the acquisition although both sides may move quickly.
