Microsoft is giving the Windows 11 start menu a makeover. You will have more options to determine which apps you want to display in the menu and how they are sorted.
The start menu was one of the major innovations of Windows 11, but since its launch in 2021, not much has changed. That seems to be changing. In the latest preview version of Windows 11 for developers, Microsoft is testing a renewed start menu for Windows 11, Windows Central reports. Those who are not on Microsoft’s test list can still get a first look at the start menu through demos shared on social media.
In the renewed start menu, Microsoft addresses the lack of personalization options. Currently, you can pin a handful of applications, but that’s about it. The list of recommended apps and files is compiled by Windows itself.
Renewed Start Menu Windows 11
Through the Windows settings, users will have more control over what will and will not be displayed in the start menu. You will be able to completely remove the recommended list from the start menu. This will free up more space for the apps you want to pin to the start menu.
Instead of a maximum of two rows, you can display all pinned apps without having to unfold an additional window. A final innovation is that you can group apps into thematic folders.
Microsoft has not yet communicated about the renewed start menu, so we’re keeping the salt close for now. The software company is busy with the festivities for its fiftieth anniversary, which it celebrates today. It’s unclear when the renewed start menu could roll out to a wider audience. Possibly, this will only happen with the major feature update in the fall. This is conditional on it being well-received by the Insider testers, who, like a Roman emperor in the Colosseum, decide the fate of new Windows features.
