OpenAI Wants to Make ChatGPT more Human Again

OpenAI is soon launching a new version of its chatbot aimed at bringing back the human element.

OpenAI plans to roll out a new version of ChatGPT in the coming weeks. The company wants to bring back the ‘human aspects’ of GPT-4o to the new version and give adults more control over their AI assistant’s personality. However, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman emphasizes that this will come with strict age verification and safety measures.

Personalities

“In a few weeks, we plan to release a new version of ChatGPT that’s more like what people enjoyed about 4o,” Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated in a post on X. “If you want your ChatGPT to respond very humanly, use lots of emojis, or act like a friend, then ChatGPT should do that (but only if you want it to, not because we want to maximize usage).”

ChatGPT-4o already showed a human aspect and a healthy dose of enthusiasm. When the successor GPT-5 was announced, not everyone was happy with this. The newest model is more business-like and, according to OpenAI, comparable to a doctoral student. Initially, dissatisfied users couldn’t switch back to GPT-4o, though OpenAI quickly changed this.

Business-like versus Enthusiasm

Our editorial team recently conducted a comparative test between GPT-5 and GPT-4o. This revealed that GPT-5 adopts a more business-like but realistic tone compared to the sometimes excessive enthusiasm of GPT-4o. However, it’s precisely this latter aspect that OpenAI wants to bring back for people who need it.

GPT-5 Gets a Warmer Personality and Fewer Restrictions

“We made ChatGPT quite restrictive to ensure we handle mental health issues carefully. We realize this made the function less useful/fun for many users who didn’t have mental health issues, but given the seriousness of the matter, we wanted to handle this properly,” says Altman.
