OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a desktop browser for macOS with full ChatGPT integration.

Search engines and AI are becoming increasingly intertwined. For example, Google recently brought its AI mode to Belgium. OpenAI also showed the first signs of its own web browser this summer. Today, the company is officially launching ChatGPT Atlas. This AI web browser is an alternative to traditional web browsers, but with ChatGPT in the lead.

The browser supports users while surfing by understanding context, analyzing information, and performing tasks within the active browser tab. Thanks to a built-in memory, the chatbot can recall memories from previous chats. ChatGPT Atlas is now available worldwide on macOS for free and paying users.

Fresh in Memory

OpenAI’s new AI web browser has a strong memory. The chatbot can not only summarize websites and analyze data, but also recall memories from previous chats thanks to a built-in memory.

For example, do you want to recall the tabs from your search for Halloween decorations? Then the chatbot will reopen them for you in the browser. This memory is optional, and users retain control over what information is stored or deleted.

Agent Mode

Agent mode allows ChatGPT to proactively perform actions, such as opening tabs, gathering information, or scheduling appointments.

This mode is being launched as a preview and is available to Plus, Pro, and Business users. OpenAI does warn that this feature may make mistakes in complex workflows. Security measures are built in, such as restrictions on access to files or other applications.

User Control

Users can decide which pages ChatGPT can analyze. They can manage the memory, exclude pages, or enable incognito mode. They can also indicate whether their browser data may contribute to the training of the AI models. Parents are given the option to exercise additional supervision via parental controls, including disabling memory and agent mode.

ChatGPT Atlas is currently only available for macOS. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are in development. Business users and schools can also use the browser, provided that the administrator enables it.
