Nutanix NKP Metal now also runs Kubernetes directly on bare-metal servers

Nutanix launches NKP Metal, an expansion of the Nutanix Kubernetes Platform that allows organizations to run containers directly on physical infrastructure. The solution combines the performance benefits of bare metal with the operational ease of a hyperconverged environment.

Kubernetes on bare metal is not a new concept. Many organizations running GPU-intensive AI workloads or edge applications consciously choose physical servers to avoid hypervisor overhead. The problem is that this choice usually comes with a significant amount of operational complexity: firmware updates, storage integration, network management, and lifecycle management quickly require a separate specialized team.

Dual-native architecture

NKP Metal, announced at Nutanix‘s Next conference in Chicago, aims to bridge that gap. Unlike solutions focused either on a hypervisor or strictly on Kubernetes, NKP Metal employs a dual-native architecture. Containers and virtual machines run as equal workloads under a single operational model. This is particularly relevant for AI training on GPU clusters, where performance on bare metal is measurably better, but where the organization simultaneously needs the manageability of a platform like Nutanix Cloud Platform.

Specifically, NKP Metal offers automated deployment via Nutanix Foundation, lifecycle management of firmware and operating systems via Lifecycle Manager, and enterprise storage services via a Container Storage Interface. Organizations can also deploy Cloud Native AOS as a storage solution specifically designed for bare-metal Kubernetes, supplemented by Nutanix Data Services for Kubernetes-native data services.

Competition and availability

With NKP Metal, Nutanix is positioning itself more firmly against Red Hat OpenShift and SUSE Rancher, both of which have supported bare-metal Kubernetes for some time. According to Nutanix, the difference lies in the integration with the broader Nutanix stack: those already running NCI get a consistent experience across both virtualized and bare-metal environments with NKP Metal. Whether that offers enough differentiation for organizations not already in the Nutanix ecosystem remains to be seen.

NKP Metal is now available in Early Access for NKP Pro and Ultimate licensees. General availability is expected in the second half of 2026.
