Microsoft starts rollout of Bing generative search, but only in U.S.

Microsoft is bringing Bing generative search to all U.S. users. This AI-powered search experience creates a summary based on your searches.

Microsoft launches “Bing generative search,” the new AI-powered search experience in Bing. After a pilot study in July, Bing is now beginning the rollout to U.S. users. Bing generative search thus follows in the footsteps of Google’s similar AI-powered search experience. While the latter is already known to provide strange answers, it is not yet clear how Bing will handle it.

Generative search

“By combining the power of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) with the search results page, Bing’s generative search creates a customized and dynamic response to a user’s query,” Microsoft wrote in a blog.

Microsoft cites the example of a user searching for “What is a spaghetti western?” Bing then displays an AI-generated experience that goes into the genre, history, and adds links to resources.

Bing generative search goes beyond merely providing the answer. “It understands search, looks at millions of information sources, dynamically matches content and generates search results in a new AI-generated layout to more effectively fulfill the intent of the user’s query,” Microsoft said.

Strange Answers

Google’s AI-powered search experience was already known for giving strange answers. In fact, the search engine gave questionable suggestions to users, like putting glue on pizza. Google responded to the criticism, finding it excessive. The company did say it was making improvements to its search engine.

How Microsoft will try to avoid this with Bing is not yet clear from the blog. Although Microsoft wants to compete with Google with Bing generative search, the market share between the two search giants remains high, with Google still holding the upper hand.
