Microsoft Teams Launches Feature that Tracks Employee Location

Microsoft Teams is rolling out a new feature that displays employee location based on Wi-Fi connection.

Microsoft Teams will soon roll out a new feature that allows employers to check employee location. As soon as an employee enters the office and their devices connect to the building’s Wi-Fi, Teams tracks the location. Leave the office afterward? Then your work location gets updated. Microsoft states on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap page that the feature is disabled by default. The rollout is scheduled for December 2025.

Tracking via Wi-Fi

The feature works based on Wi-Fi connection. As soon as your devices connect to the internet at the office, the employer can check your location. When you subsequently leave the location again and thus break the Wi-Fi connection, Teams automatically changes your work location.

A feature that automatically shares your work location? It sounds quite unsettling. Although the feature is disabled by default, you might question whether the existence of this feature is justifiable. Moreover, administrators can enable the feature and ask users to sign up. Your employer thus holds the reins and can choose how Teams monitors you.
