Microsoft has fully open-sourced its advanced AI model, Phi-4.
The Phi-4 model is now available on Hugging Face with an MIT license. Researchers and companies can get started there with the model’s, according to Microsoft, strong reasoning performance.
‘Exceptional performance’
Microsoft states that Phi-4 is a compact model with 14 billion parameters, designed to deliver exceptional performance in mathematical reasoning and multitasking, while requiring less computing power than larger competitors such as GPT-4o-mini. According to Microsoft, the model outperforms some benchmarks, and excels in functional code generation.
Phi-4’s training included 9.8 trillion tokens of synthetic data, such as academic texts and programming data, for example. Microsoft also focuses on security and ethics through controlled tuning and optimization.
With this release, Microsoft aims to give researchers and developers worldwide access to a model for commercial applications. This offers an alternative to the trend of ever larger AI models and bets on efficiency without sacrificing performance.
