Microsoft gets users excited about Copilot with pay-as-you-go offering

Microsoft is launching a new offering, Copilot Chat, with a pay-as-you-go formula that lets users sample its AI assistant.

Microsoft is making several attempts to get users excited about Copilot, to get its AI assistant to as many users as possible. For example, the AI assistant was recently added unsolicited to personal 365 subscriptions. Now the company is introducing a new offering, Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, which offers pay-as-you-go agents for commercial Microsoft 365 customers. “Copilot Chat is a powerful new ramp for everyone in an organization to build the AI habit,” Microsoft said in its blog.

Pay-as-you-go

Microsoft is launching Copilot Chat, a pay-as-you-go plan for enterprise customers that combines some of the existing AI-powered features for Microsoft 365. This new plan is supported by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model.

“Copilot Chat adds pay-as-you-go to the existing free chat experience for Microsoft 365 commercial customers. With Copilot Chat, your entire workforce, from customer service representatives to marketing leads to frontline engineers, can start using Copilot and agents today,” Microsoft’s blog reads.

What it (can’t) do

Copilot Chat includes Web-based chat with GPT-4o that allows users to conduct market research, write strategy documents or prepare a meeting. Copilot pages allow real-time collaboration with colleagues and creation of AI-generated images. There is also the ability to create agents that can automate repetitive tasks and business processes.

The Copilot Chat subscription has similarities to Microsoft 365 Copilot, yet lacks some key applications. For example, it lacks the pre-built agents for Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Copilot Chat is a clear attempt by Microsoft to get even more users excited about its AI assistant. Microsoft itself describes it as a “powerful new ramp for everyone in an organization to build the AI habit.”
