Microsoft acknowledges Windows issue: apps crash when saving to OneDrive or Dropbox

Montreal, Canada - February 28, 2019: Microsoft, Onedrive, New, Icon.

Microsoft acknowledges that the January Windows update can cause apps to crash when saving to OneDrive or DropBox, and is currently working on a solution.

The first Windows updates of the year immediately caused problems in January. Microsoft confirms an issue where some applications stop responding or display errors when opening or saving files in cloud storage after recent Windows updates. Specifically, this concerns Windows updates released on or after January 13, 2026 (KB5074109).

Outlook configurations with PST files on OneDrive are particularly affected. Microsoft now acknowledges these issues in a new blog post and is currently working on a solution. In another recent issue, Windows 11 computers refused to shut down, although that has since been resolved via an out-of-band update.

PST files

Microsoft advises organizations experiencing the problem to contact the vendor of the application involved. They may be able to offer alternative ways to access the files, for example via a different storage location or a customized synchronization setting.

For Outlook-specific scenarios, Microsoft points to a practical workaround: move PST files away from OneDrive. According to Microsoft, that should fix the crashes. As a temporary option, users can also continue to consult their email via webmail, provided that the email provider supports this.

Affected Windows and Server versions

The problem can occur on multiple Windows versions. On the client side, it concerns Windows 11 versions 25H2, 24H2 and 23H2, and Windows 10 version 22H2, including Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and 2019. On the server side, Microsoft mentions Windows Server 2025, Windows Server version 23H2, Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2019.
