Google rolls out first Android 16 preview

Google has begun rolling out the first developer preview of Android 16, which the tech giant is doing to release the new features to devices faster.

Google has already started rolling out the developer preview of Android 16, changing the usual rollout schedule; normally the developer beta is not released until the second quarter, and the stable Android version after July. Android 15 was launched just last month.

Countering fragmentation

Google may want to reduce fragmentation with this move, so that the same version of Android always runs on different devices, TechCrunch knows. That would make it possible to make new features of Android available to more users more quickly.

In terms of features, the first developer preview of Android 16 gets, among other things, a built-in photo selector for apps. This allows apps to prompt users to access selected photos from both local storage and the cloud.

However, it is important that the first major release of Android 16 be stable. Only then can developers build on it without having to worry about their apps being incompatible or breaking.
