Google Meet available on Android Auto, but not for work accounts

Google Meet is now available on Android Auto for personal accounts. The service offers an audio-only experience to prevent distraction.

Earlier this year, support for Google Meet was rolled out on Apple CarPlay. Now it is Android Auto’s turn for Google Meet, allowing users to join meetings while on the road. The interface is simplified and focuses exclusively on audio, so drivers can keep their attention on the traffic.

Work profiles are not supported, meaning business users must rely on their private accounts. Google has meanwhile updated its support page, as noted by Android Authority.

Safety first

Google emphasizes that Meet on Android Auto prioritizes safety. For instance, it only offers an audio-focused experience to reduce distraction, without video calling or interactive features. This means you can join meetings without seeing anyone or being able to present. When you join a meeting, you will be put through immediately. Meet for Android does not show a pre-call screen before you enter the meeting.

Notably, Google Meet on Android Auto does not support work accounts, as Google states on its support page. “Work profile accounts are not supported in Meet on Android Auto. Active calls will still appear on your screen, but upcoming meetings and call history will not be displayed.”

Joining a meeting

Users can easily attend a scheduled meeting or call a recent contact via the Android Auto screen. Tapping the ‘Scheduled’ tab brings up an overview of upcoming meetings. Joining happens with a single press of a button, where video remains disabled by default and the microphone can be automatically muted for large meetings.

The ‘History’ tab shows recent contacts and groups, allowing users to quickly start a call. While driving, the audio automatically switches to the car speakers when the phone is connected, and back to the original device after disconnecting.
