Apple Intelligence will still be available to iPhone and iPad users in Europe from April 2025.
Apple is opening the doors for its AI suite to European Apple users after all. Initially, Apple Intelligence seemed to be available only to European macOS users. In fact, Apple disagreed with the strict rules within the DMA. During the launch of the new iOS 18.1, Apple announced that Apple Intelligence will then roll out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU in April 2025 after all.
Apple Intelligence in EU
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s first AI suite with various AI solutions for iPhone, Mac and iPad. The company could no longer lag behind its competitors and started catching up with this AI suite. For many Apple enthusiasts in Europe, things did not look so rosy for a while. Apple was initially going to release the AI suite in Europe only for macOS users. Now, with the launch of iOS18.1, the company let it be known that Apple Intelligence is coming to Europe after all.

Apple shares this in an announcement. “Mac users in the EU can use Apple Intelligence in American English with macOS Sequoia 15.1. In April, Apple Intelligence features will be rolled out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU. This includes many of Apple Intelligence’s core features, including Writing Tools, Genmoji, a redesigned Siri with better language understanding, ChatGPT integration and more.”
Culprit DMA
The reason Apple initially did not want to bring its AI suite to Europe has everything to do with the Digital Markets Act. This is because Apple has been designated as a gatekeeper and thus must comply with stricter rules. One of those rules is that Apple must open up its platforms to outside organizations, and the company did not initially see fit to do that for Apple Intelligence. What did prevail now is not clear.

Why this is now suddenly possible is something Apple is still leaving open. In a statement to TechCrunch , the company said, “Since the announcement of Apple Intelligence, we have been working on how to deliver as many features as possible in the EU in a way that complies with the DMA while maintaining user privacy and security, and to determine what additional product engineering would be required to do so. We look forward to bringing Apple Intelligence features to users in the EU in future software updates.”
