Windows Server 2025 Crashes After Failed Patch

Windows 11 computer

A security update from Microsoft causes Remote Desktop sessions on Windows Server 2025 to crash.

A new day, a new problem with Windows updates. This time, Remote Desktop is affected. The issues started after the rollout of update KB5051987 on February 11, 2025, and continue with subsequent patches.

Keyboard and Mouse Stop Responding

According to a warning from Microsoft, users may experience crashes within seconds after connecting via Remote Desktop. Once the session crashes, mouse and keyboard inputs no longer work, and a restart is required. The problem seems to stem from a previously reported bug in Windows 11 version 24H2, where RDP sessions were disconnected when connecting to older servers, such as Windows Server 2016.

Solution Only for Older Versions

Microsoft has rolled out a solution on March 27, 2025 (KB5053656), but only for Windows 11 users. For managed devices that have installed this update, no additional intervention such as a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) or custom Group Policy is needed.

For Windows Server 2025, it’s still a waiting game for a specific patch. Until then, IT administrators must rely on temporary workarounds or continue to restart Remote Desktop sessions as soon as they crash.
