The tool would make it easier to integrate AI interfaces on websites with their own data.

Microsoft has introduced NLWeb at the Build 2025 conference, an open project that makes it easier to integrate an AI chatbot on websites based on their own data. According to the tech giant, developers can add a text field with a send button using just a few lines of code and choose which AI model and data sources they want to use.

From Recipes to Travel Advice

NLWeb allows any website to offer a conversation interface, such as an online store helping customers choose an outfit or a recipe platform providing suggestions for side dishes. The technology can be linked to platforms that support the MCP protocol of Anthropic. This protocol allows AI tools and models to connect with external data systems.

Microsoft calls NLWeb “a possible HTML for web AI agents,” where AI users directly utilize web content. That’s according to TechCrunch. Web pages can also choose to make their content accessible to other AI platforms via MCP.

Origin at OpenAI?

Microsoft doesn’t specifically refer to it, but NLWeb seems similar to a technology that OpenAI has worked on earlier. According to The Information, OpenAI was working on a system to integrate ChatGPT-like functions on websites in 2023. That project was delayed, but NLWeb appears to be building on this concept.
