Ignore the error message in Windows Recovery Update, as it is incorrect.
A recent update for Windows 10 is causing an error message, but according to Microsoft, there’s nothing wrong. The message stating that installation KB5057589 has failed is incorrect, according to a blog. This might be an additional reason for users to switch to Windows 11.
Error message without a problem
The April 8 update includes improvements for Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), the recovery menu you see during serious problems. However, if you try to install another update that requires a restart at the same time, Windows may incorrectly indicate that the installation has failed. You’ll then see error code 0x80070643 – ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE.
Microsoft emphasizes that the message is incorrect. The update is correctly applied after a restart, even if Windows Update says otherwise. The error message will disappear automatically during the next daily check scan.
Confusing but harmless
Although it’s good news that you can simply ignore the message, it remains confusing for users. Microsoft says it’s working on a solution to prevent such error codes from occurring in the future.
This is not the first time a WinRE update has caused confusion, writes The Register. In 2024, users with a recovery partition that was too small saw the same error message, and again there was no clear explanation.
