Google Drive ransomware detection is now generally available to all customers, featuring an updated AI model that Google says can detect fourteen times more infections.

In October 2025, Google introduced a new AI-powered ransomware detection tool in Google Drive. This feature was first rolled out as an open beta for Google Workspace customers. Now, Google is announcing the general availability of the feature with improvements in malware detection.

“Compared to when the feature was in beta, we can now detect even more types of ransomware encryption and do so faster. Our latest AI model detects 14 times more infections, leading to even more comprehensive protection,” Google stated in a blog post.

Standard for paying users

The AI-powered ransomware detection in Google Drive ensures that file synchronization is immediately halted when the feature detects a ransomware attack. Users receive a clear warning on their computer, while administrators receive a notification in the security center of the Admin console. Warning emails are also sent to both users and administrators to enable quick action.

Detection only works if the latest version of Drive for desktop (v.114 or later) is installed. In older versions, synchronization remains paused, but detection notifications are not available. Administrators can centrally manage ransomware detection via the Admin console.

14 times more detections

The new AI technology in Google Drive now detects fourteen times more ransomware infections than during the beta period. This allows organizations to better protect their data and respond more quickly to potential threats.

Google offers file recovery for all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts. Ransomware detection is available for business users with a Business Standard or Plus subscription, Enterprise users with a Starter, Standard, or Plus edition, educational institutions with an Education Standard or Plus subscription, and Frontline users with a Standard or Plus edition.
