Microsoft allows users to sign up for free security updates, even after October 2025.
Users who want to continue using Windows 10 for a while longer can now register for free security updates through Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. A month ago, Microsoft already announced that it would offer a free alternative alongside the previously announced paid option of $30 per device.
Register via New Wizard
The registration process is done through a new wizard in the Windows settings. According to Microsoft, users will receive a notification on their device allowing them to easily register. The registration is intended for users who link their Windows 10 PC with a Microsoft account and synchronize their settings in the cloud.

Those who prefer not to use a Microsoft account can opt for the paid option of $30 per year. This entitles them to security updates for up to three years after October 2025.
Security Updates Only, No New Features
The free ESU program only offers security updates. New features or bug fixes are reserved for Windows 11. Users will only receive protection against new vulnerabilities, but no quality or usability improvements.
According to Windows Central, the wizard is being rolled out in phases. Some devices do not yet show the option, even after an update and restart. Those who do see the wizard can choose between the free cloud version or the paid offline option.
