Cyberattack on eSignFlow halts digital signing in Steenokkerzeel

Residents of Steenokkerzeel can temporarily no longer sign documents digitally. The cause is a cyberattack on eSignFlow, the company responsible for the system.

Anyone in Steenokkerzeel who needs to sign documents digitally will have to wait a while. Since this weekend, documents can no longer be signed digitally in the Flemish municipality following a cyberattack on eSignFlow, the company responsible for the digital system. Several services were taken offline as a precaution. Mayor Kurt Ryon (Klaver/N-VA) confirmed the cyberattack to VRT nws.

The municipality of Steenokkerzeel has taken several services offline as a precaution. As a result, it is temporarily impossible to request population certificates, civil status records and criminal record extracts. Building permit and passport applications are also temporarily on hold. “In the meantime, I will sign the necessary documents by hand, like in the old days,” the mayor told VRT nws.

Other municipalities that use the same services may also experience problems. eSignFlow, the company behind the digital signature system, has not yet responded.

In September, the municipality of Machelen was hit by a cyberattack in which personal data was stolen. It is unclear whether data was stolen in the cyberattack on eSignFlow.
