Citymesh is launching two pilot projects at AZ Zeno and Maria Middelares Hospital to explore the potential of 5G in healthcare.
Citymesh, supplier of industrial Wi-Fi and 5G solutions, together with the AZ Zeno in Knokke-Heist and the Maria Middelares Hospital in Ghent, is investigating how 5G can contribute to faster communication and more efficient care processes in hospitals. The technology is being tested in practice to evaluate its impact on patient care and hospital operations.
Growing data flows in hospitals are putting pressure on existing network capacity. This hampers applications such as telemonitoring and remote care. Citymesh, with support from the Connecting Europe Facility and the FPS Economy, is looking at how 5G can address these challenges. The technology should provide more stable and faster connections, which could improve the accessibility and efficiency of care.
Two pilot projects
Citymesh is launching individual pilot projects in each hospital, starting from a different angle. In the Maria Middelares hospital, the West Flanders telecom company will install a 5G-PP network. This will combine a private 5G network with public network infrastructure. This project focuses on secure and fast data exchange, better cooperation between healthcare providers and improved remote care.
Together with AZ Zeno, Citymesh will explore 5G applications that could add value to healthcare in the future. This research looks at applications that make hospital operations more efficient and support patient-centered care through smart technologies. Some of the technologies being tested include Voice-over-New Radio communications, multi-phase control systems for medication administration, wireless security systems and drones for blood transport.
